Basics of Group Discussion

Basically any group discussion will have some people of your age and your Competency who will be asked to discuss / argue upon some common topic given by the employer for about 15-20 min.

The topics may vary from LKG admission in schools to PM Electoral candidate selection…

You can see for the list of topics under the GD Topics subsection..

Hit First, Hit Hard & Keep on Hitting is the key for any GD

Also any GD should be a WIN – WIN situation for the team as a whole.

Before GD :

Before you get into any Group discussion please go through the following

Topics for GD are not taken from text books but from “REAL WORLD”.

It could be famous issue in society, or any debated topic in parliament or even about cinemas.
Preparation for GD is similar to “General awareness” preparation (refer that section posts for the same)

English Newspapers & magazines are good source of information on any general topic. (I personally recommend the “The Editorial” section of THE HINDU to have a better idea on topics

Before GD just rush through the past month happening in Google news and write down a short notes for both & against the topic and be prepared.

My Personal Insight:

Any topic will have the following views. If you know nothing about the topic or if you know everything about the topic please categorize under these so that you could better remember it.

PESTLE Analysis
  •  Political
  •  Economical
  •  Social
  •  Technological
  •  Legal
  •  Environmental

During GD:

When the GD starts, the topic will be given

·         Start the discussion and list down the basic points you know about the topic
·         Be confident about your Language. (Never bother to use very hi-fi English if you are not familiar with)
·         Be simple and talk statistical data
·         Giving introduction on the topic allows you to begin the discussion and allow you to set a tone for others to follow
·         If you miss a chance to start a discussion don’t be bothered as talking first and giving irrelevant data may shy u away from the group
·         Please Ensure that you are understandable to the group. Try to avoid native language though everyone in the group knows Ur native language
·         Listen to others conversation. It may help you to improvise your view on the topic
·         Actively participate in the GD.
·         Make everyone in the group to participate in the GD. Never dominate others
·         You are not fighting against anyone in the GD. Instead you are working towards a common goal of arriving at a conclusion for the given topic considering the various views.
